Clay Shirky: Institutions vs. Collaboration

This is from 2005. Four years ago!

The money quote for us comes at 12 mins, 39 secs into the video.

“The bigger question is … what do you do about the value down here?”.

If the Liberal movement is not authentically tapping into individuals, empowering them to contribute, actualize their personal identities as Liberals and form meaningful, consequential relationships with others then we miss the boat in so many ways. Fund raising, volunteering, putting a sign on your lawn at least. But make no mistake, this is key to solving the big problems like increasing Canadian productivity, creating globally competitive companies, solving our demographic conundrums like health care.

The implication of the video for the Liberal Party is much, much bigger than that.

Political parties are institutions. Therefore they are under threat from those collaborating on politics as individuals.

As someone who has been disillusioned by every party he’s ever liked, I’m happy about that.

Thanks for dropping by Rohan. Much appreciated. I agree, all institutions are going to experience dramatic change over the next few years. So will adapt, and survive, perhaps thrive. Some will become obsolete.
